Chicago’s Fulton-Randolph Market District continues its transformation from the domain of the gritty working-man to the territory of the latte-slurping hipster with the latest project to make better use of the land so close to the heart of the city.  The latest step comes from West Town transformation engine Sterling Bay, which has filed paperwork with the city to start its new office building, on the southwest corner of Lake and Carpenter.

210 North Carpenter will be a 13-story mixed use building running east-west for the entire block just north of the CTA’s Green/Pink Line L tracks.  This is the former location of a Christina Foods warehouse that at one time featured two industrial coolers, three industrial freezers, and a fruit and vegetable ripening room.  The building was sold for $2.3 million last year and razed.

In its place will be a 185-foot-tall building designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz.  It features an 11th-floor setback for greenspace, and will be clad largely in brick and masonry, except above the setback where it goes full-modern with a glass and aluminum curtain wall.
